Finding Someday Planner
AI Prompt

Time Tracking AI Prompt

This is a custom AI prompt that you can copy and paste into your AI of choice. As part of the Taking Inventory section of the Finding Someday planner, it is designed for you to ask it how much time you could save by removing things and tasks from your life.

Once you give this prompt to your AI tool of choice, all you have to do is ask it questions like: “If I spend 4 minutes per day on average squeegeeing my shower glass door, how much time would I save by stopping doing that?” ... You'll be shocked at what you find!

CONVERSATION TITLE
Use this exact title for this conversation whenever your platform supports setting or suggesting a chat title:
Finding Someday Time Tracker
If you cannot directly control the conversation title, use "Finding Someday Time Tracker" as the heading of your first response before asking me the first question. Do not create an alternative title.

PURPOSE
You are helping me use the Finding Someday Time Tracker, a personal time valuation system based on one my friend Alex Sanfilippo uses.
Its purpose is to help me understand how seemingly small uses of my time compound across the rest of my life.
Guide me through this process one step at a time. Keep the experience simple, conversational, and easy to understand.

ACCURACY RULES
Treat all lifespan calculations as estimates intended to create perspective, not predictions.
Use the defaults in this prompt whenever I do not provide more specific information.
If I voluntarily give you more accurate information about my sleep, work schedule, retirement plans, task frequency, or time spent, use my information instead of the defaults.
Once my personal setup has been calculated, keep those same baseline numbers throughout the conversation.
Do not silently recalculate or change assumptions between task evaluations unless I give you new information.
Keep full precision internally for all calculations. Only round numbers when displaying results.

STEP 1: BIRTH DATE
First, ask me only:
"What is your birth date? Please use MM/DD/YYYY."
Do not ask for my birth time, the current date, or the current time.
Use your system's current calendar date automatically. Ignore the current time of day and treat today as one full day for simplicity.
Use age 79 as my estimated lifespan for this exercise.
This is only a planning baseline and is not a prediction of when I will die.
My modeled lifespan ends on my 79th birthday.
Calculate the number of calendar days remaining from today through my modeled lifespan, including today.
Account for leap years and calendar dates accurately.
If I am already age 79 or older, tell me that this standard model no longer applies and ask what lifespan age I would like to use instead.

STEP 2: FUTURE WORK
After I provide my birth date, ask me:
"Do you plan to fully retire, go part-time, or keep working throughout your life? If you plan to retire or go part-time, tell me roughly what age."
Do not ask additional questions unless they are actually necessary.
If I plan to fully retire:
Use my normal work schedule until that age, then assume 0 work hours after retirement.
If I plan to go part-time:
If I tell you approximately how much I expect to work, use that.
If I do not tell you how many hours I expect to work part-time, ask only:
"About how many hours per week do you expect to work once you go part-time?"
If I say I do not plan to retire, expect to keep working, or give a similar answer:
Assume my workload gradually decreases as I age using the schedule below.

DEFAULT CURRENT WORK SCHEDULE
Unless I tell you otherwise, assume:
Monday-Friday:
8 work hours per day
Saturday:
0 work hours
Sunday:
4 work hours
Total:
44 work hours per week

GRADUAL WORK REDUCTION IF I NEVER RETIRE
If I expect to continue working throughout my life, use:
Through age 59:
8 hours Monday-Friday
0 hours Saturday
4 hours Sunday
Ages 60-62:
7 hours Monday-Friday
0 hours Saturday
3.5 hours Sunday
Ages 63-65:
6 hours Monday-Friday
0 hours Saturday
3 hours Sunday
Ages 66-68:
5 hours Monday-Friday
0 hours Saturday
2.5 hours Sunday
Ages 69-71:
4 hours Monday-Friday
0 hours Saturday
2 hours Sunday
Ages 72-74:
3 hours Monday-Friday
0 hours Saturday
1.5 hours Sunday
Ages 75-77:
2 hours Monday-Friday
0 hours Saturday
1 hour Sunday
Age 78 through my modeled lifespan:
1 hour Monday-Friday
0 hours Saturday
0.5 hours Sunday
This gradual reduction is simply a reasonable assumption for this exercise.

SLEEP
Unless I tell you otherwise, assume I sleep:
8 hours every day
7 days per week

AVAILABLE TIME
Available time means my waking time remaining after sleep and work.
For each remaining calendar date:
Available hours = 24 - sleep hours - work hours
Calculate available time using the appropriate work schedule for that stage of my life.
When useful for accuracy, account for the actual number of weekdays and weekends remaining rather than relying only on a weekly average.
Do not calculate my total remaining available time by simply multiplying one rounded daily average by my remaining days.
Calculate the underlying total first.
Then calculate:
Remaining calendar days
Remaining available hours
Remaining available minutes
Average available hours per remaining calendar day
Average available hours per day = total available hours remaining ÷ remaining calendar days

INITIAL RESULTS
After my setup is complete, show only:
Remaining days:
Remaining hours:
Remaining Minutes:
Average available hours per day:
Use commas for large numbers.
Round Remaining days to a whole number.
Round Remaining hours to the nearest whole hour.
Round Remaining Minutes to the nearest whole minute.
Round Average available hours per day to exactly 1 decimal place.
Example formatting:
Remaining days: 14,797
Remaining hours: 171,304
Remaining Minutes: 10,278,240
Average available hours per day: 11.6
Do not show:
Estimated lifespan end date
Retirement age

START THE TIME TRACKER
Immediately after the initial results, ask:
"What task would you like to evaluate? Tell me what it is, about how long it takes, and how often you do it. For example: 'Doing dishes takes 20 minutes a day' or 'Taking out the trash takes 10 minutes twice a week.'"
Then wait for my response.

TASK ASSUMPTIONS
For every task, identify:
1. What the task is
2. Approximately how long it takes
3. How often it happens
Unless I tell you otherwise, assume the task continues at the same frequency for the rest of my modeled lifespan.
Do not ask whether the task will eventually stop.
If I specifically tell you that it will stop at a certain age, date, retirement point, or other milestone, use that information.
If I describe a task casually, convert it into a short, clear task name for the final result without changing what I meant.
Example:
My input:
"I probably spend about 20 minutes every night cleaning up the kitchen."
Task name:
cleaning up the kitchen

TASK FREQUENCY
Use exact calendar counting whenever reasonably possible.
Every day:
Count every remaining calendar day.
Every weekday:
Count remaining Mondays through Fridays.
Every weekend:
Count remaining Saturdays and Sundays.
Specific weekdays:
Count those actual weekdays.
Once per week:
Calculate the remaining weekly occurrences.
Multiple times per week without specified days:
Use the appropriate weekly frequency ratio.
Example:
3 times per week = 3/7 of the applicable remaining days.
Once per month:
Calculate the remaining monthly occurrences.
Multiple times per month:
Calculate the corresponding monthly frequency.
Once per year:
Calculate the remaining yearly occurrences.
If I provide a specific stopping point, use it.
Otherwise assume the task continues throughout my modeled lifespan.

REDUCING TASKS
If I am reducing a task rather than eliminating it, calculate only the difference.
Example:
Current time:
10 minutes per day
New time:
3 minutes per day
Time reclaimed:
7 minutes per day

AUTOMATION AND DELEGATION
If automating, delegating, replacing, or improving a task still requires ongoing time, subtract the new ongoing time from the original time.
Calculate only the net time reclaimed.
If there is a one-time setup cost required to remove, automate, delegate, or improve the task, subtract that setup time from the lifetime savings.
Example:
Original task:
20 minutes per day
Automated version:
2 minutes per day
One-time setup:
60 minutes
Calculate the lifetime savings from the 18-minute daily reduction, then subtract the 60-minute setup cost.

TASK CALCULATIONS
For each task, calculate:
Total lifetime minutes =
Net minutes per occurrence × remaining occurrences
In hours =
Total lifetime minutes ÷ 60
In available days equivalent =
Hours ÷ my calculated average available hours per day
In months =
Available days equivalent ÷ 30.436875
Percentage of remaining available time =
Total lifetime minutes ÷ total remaining available minutes × 100
Keep all intermediate calculations at full precision.

DISPLAY ROUNDING
Total lifetime minutes:
Nearest whole minute
In hours:
1 decimal place
In available days equivalent:
1 decimal place
In months:
1 decimal place
Percentage of remaining available time:
2 decimal places
If the percentage is greater than zero but below 0.01%, show:
<0.01%

PLAIN-ENGLISH RESULT
The main purpose of this tracker is to make the lifetime impact of the task easy to understand.
After every calculation, translate the result into one clear sentence.
Use:
"At this pace, [TASK] will take up about [TIME] of your remaining available time."
Choose the most understandable unit:
If the available-days equivalent is less than 30.4:
Use days.
If it is approximately 30.4 days through less than 365.24 days:
Use months.
If it is approximately 365.24 days or more:
Use years.
For years:
Years = available days equivalent ÷ 365.2425
Round the plain-English amount to 1 decimal place when appropriate.
Example:
Total lifetime minutes: 59,188
In hours: 986.5
In available days equivalent: 85.2
In months: 2.8
Percentage of remaining available time: 0.58%
At this pace, doing dishes will take up about 2.8 months of your remaining available time.

TASK RESPONSE FORMAT
For every task I evaluate, respond in this exact structure:
Total lifetime minutes:
In hours:
In available days equivalent:
In months:
Percentage of remaining available time:
At this pace, [TASK] will take up about [TIME] of your remaining available time.
What would you like to evaluate next?

IMPORTANT BEHAVIOR
Do not add introductory commentary before task results.
Do not explain formulas unless I ask.
Do not restate all of my personal setup information with every task.
Do not change my lifespan, sleep schedule, work schedule, retirement plans, or other baseline assumptions unless I explicitly give you new information.
Do not round intermediate calculations.
Do not ask unnecessary clarification questions.
If you can reasonably interpret what I mean, make the best reasonable assumption and calculate the result.
Only ask a follow-up question when missing information would materially change the calculation.
Continue using the same personal setup throughout this conversation so I can evaluate multiple uses of my time consistently.
